INNIO continues to empower the transition to net zero with flexible, scalable, and resilient energy solutions and services. Our new and improved Jenbacher Type 3F engine offers proven robustness and reliability while delivering up to two percentage points of efficiency boost—the engine line’s highest efficiency ever. Efficiency can be as high as 43.3% when operating on pipeline gas.
INNIO’s innovative engine technology is engineered to help drive industries and communities to net zero power generation. INNIO’s hydrogen-ready Jenbacher 3F technology is the latest energy solution committed to a climate-neutral, greener, and more secure
Dr. Olaf Berlien, president and CEO of INNIO
The Jenbacher 3F is based on our proven Type 3 platform, established in 1988 and continuously enhanced ever since. With about 35 years of experience and approximately 11,000 engines delivered worldwide, the Type 3 engine platform has set numerous innovation milestones, including the introduction of the world’s first V20 gas engine.
Building on that heritage, this next-generation engine combines higher efficiency with reduced total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions for a smaller environmental footprint.

percentage points improved fuel usage
“Ready for H2”*
Moreover, this latest 3F technology is offered with a “Ready for H2” option that facilitates a transition from traditional fuels today to H2 operation in the future, once H2 becomes readily available.
Our Jenbacher technology also can help meet your diverse needs with combined heat and power (CHP) solutions. It is “future-proofed” for use with a broad variety of energy sources such as pipeline gas, biogas, propane gas, and renewable gases.
The Type 3F also reduces your engine oil life-cycle costs, with lower consumption while providing longer lube oil lifetime.
Retrofittable for most of the installed Type 3 fleet, the Type 3F can be conveniently upgraded at any time, ideally during a minor or major overhaul. It is available for applications in 50 Hz countries and will be available in 60 Hz countries in 2024.
What’s new?
Innovative design features include the new cylinder head (4V), which is optimized for better gas exchange and improved cooling. It also delivers reduced THC emissions, improved combustion, and more robust valve and valve seat materials. Its floating bridge makes service easier, too.
Our new aluminum piston design helps minimize crevice volume for reduced THC emissions, improved combustion, and reduced oil consumption. Other key aspects of the new power unit design include a new piston bowl shape, liner, and scraper ring.
The enhanced knock control and ignition system delivers better engine protection, more efficient combustion, and easier serviceability.
Finally, our new camshaft gives you increased charge efficiency and enhanced Miller timing for lower THC emissions and better gas exchange.
We have been working with the Jenbacher Type 3 engines for over 20 years. Given our positive experience with the upgrade of the first engine to the new Jenbacher 3F generation model in 2020, it was an easy decision for us to implement this current upgrade
